La Répétition de l'Impossible

Prometeogallery by Ida Pisani is delighted to present “La repetition de l’Impossible” (The Repetition of the Impossible), the first solo gallery exhibition of Greek artist Mary Zygouri (Athens, 1973).

Mary Zygouri researches and constructs the politics and poetics of the archive, by placing herself in the cracks, in the clashes, and in the silences, and bringing to the surface “minor” stories that call for a listening ear.

Zygouri creates a political and civic poetry through different languages, from performance, to video and installation; from embroidery to photography, and invites the viewer to a multi-layered reading of the meanings presented. In her works, urban and social space – with all their inconsistencies, fractures and contradictions – becomes a loud platform open to the active participation of the citizens-actors-spectators. This arena thus conceives alternative viewpoints, and de-naturalises deeply rooted concepts and ideas in an endless struggle to give back to things their true meaning, to pave new roads towards new visions. With an allegorical attitude, she creates critical strategies aimed at building history and art history visually anew, by modifying the preconceived communication and societal modes.

Four major projects realised by the artist in the last few years are here on show: Venus Of The Rags / In Transit \ Eleusis, 2014; Movement in Semi-Freedom, 2015; Je Reviens Toujours, 2017; THE ROUND UP Project: Kokkinia 1979 – Kokkinia, 2017 / M.K. \ M.Z, 2017 (realised for Documenta 14, Athens and Kassel).
